Dr. Maria Monteiro

Lecturer in Church Music

Dr. Maria Monteiro

For seventeen years Maria Monteiro taught music at Baptist University of the Américas (BUA) in San Antonio, Texas; She has served at First Mexican Baptist Church of San Antonio since 2008; and in 2021 completed a Ph.D. in Church Music from Baylor University. These roles and activities have provided the essential connection between her academic interest in church music and the practical involvement in the musical life of a present-day congregation.

Maria has found her work in academia essential to her understanding of important issues in the field of church music—past and present, local and global—and to her ability to educate and serve her fellow church members and students in the consequential work of music ministry.

Baylor has played a central role in her academic development—she holds a Master of Music (1991) and a Bachelor of Music (1987) degrees in Music History and Literature from Baylor—and the University’s mission and values continue to resonate with her own beliefs and aspirations. It is a great honor for Maria to join the Baylor faculty and to work alongside her Church Music professors and mentors, Dr. Randall Bradley, Dr. Monique Ingalls, and Dr. David Music.

My allegiance to the Christian faith is at the core of my identity and I have made it a priority to dedicate my time, skills, and energy to the service of the Church through music. My experiences in this area have been varied and enriching, starting in Recife, Brazil where I was born, and continuing to this day.

Maria Monteiro is married to Marconi Monteiro, a senior medical educator at UTMB Galveston. They have one daughter, Juliana, an art teacher at Hondo High School (fun fact: as a family, they have six degrees from Baylor, so far).
