Heart, Soul, and Service: A Spotlight on D.M.A. Student Sylvia Jones’s Journey Through Church Music at Baylor University

November 18, 2025

In the heart of Baylor University’s School of Music, doctoral student Sylvia D. Jones is crafting a legacy that blends classical excellence with spiritual depth. A soprano whose voice has been described as “angelic,” “full of passion,” and “tear-jerking,” Jones is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts in Church Music with an emphasis in vocal performance, a path that reflects both her artistry and her calling.

Jones’s musical journey began in the Pacific Northwest, where she earned dual degrees in Music Education and Music-Voice from the University of Washington. Her academic and artistic pursuits led her to Baylor, where she completed a Master of Music in Church Music before continuing into the doctoral program. Under the mentorship of Dr. Kimberly Monzón, Jones is refining her vocal technique while exploring the intersection of faith and music.

Her versatility as a performer is evident in her repertoire, which spans genres from classical to gospel. She has graced prestigious stages, including a solo debut at Carnegie Hall as part of Baylor’s Semper Pro Musica Winners Recital in 2022. That same year, she was a featured soloist in the beloved “A Baylor Christmas” production, and in 2024, she won the Baylor Symphony Orchestra Aria Competition, further cementing her reputation as a rising star in vocal performance.

Beyond performance, Jones serves in leadership appointments for ensembles and organizations across the campus. This includes vocal directing the Dunn Center’s 40 Collective and serving as president of the Heavenly Voices Gospel Choir. Sylvia is a leader in Unite InterVarsity, a ministry for grad students led by grad students. There, she helps with planning fellowship events, Bible Study topics, and to rotate leading weekly prayer meetings. Other organizations Sylvia has been involved in include Baylor Opera Theatre, A Cappella Choir, Bella Voce, the Student National Association of Teachers of Singing, the American Choral Directors Association, the School of Music Student Council, and the Black Faculty and Staff Association (graduate student member).

In the Dunn Center, she has led worship for past Advisory Board meetings, supervised graduate associates, taught sessions for Worship Lab’s summer camp and local church workshops, and served on the planning team for the annual Alleluia Conference. “Sylvia is a kind and compassionate student, who is deeply dedicated to the success of the Center and her peers,” said Chason Disheroon, Associate Director of the Center for Christian Music Studies. “She has, on many occasions, gone above and beyond to ensure events were successful. She’s not only a skilled musician, but also a generous collaborator and leader.”
