CELEBRATING THE JOURNEY: REFLECTING ON SUCCESSES OF 2025

December 9, 2025

As 2025 comes to a close, we pause to reflect on the work of the Dunn Center, Church Music faculty, students, and alumni. From classrooms to sanctuaries, rehearsals to worship gatherings, our community has poured energy, creativity, and faith into shaping leaders within the church. This seasons invites us to not only celebrate milestones but also recognize the many ways God has been at work among us.

Sacred Harp

Sacred Harp Sing

The 21st annual singing was hosted at Truett Theological Seminary in February. Singers from Texas and beyond came together for the singing. Dr. Stuart Ivey (Assistant Director of Bands) led the singing school. It was the final year for using the 1991 edition of the Sacred Harp.

Northcutt 2025

Northcutt Lecture Series

Dr. Karen Westerfield Tucker delivered the 40th annual Northcutt Lecture, titled “Sacrament, Sacramental, Expression of Sacramentality?: A Consideration of Congregational Song and Singing,” drawing on both classical and contemporary theological perspectives. Her lecture invited listeners to consider how congregational song, within the context of gathered worship, might function as sacrament, be sacramental, or express sacramentality. During her visit, Dr. Westerfield Tucker engaged with church music students and faculty, sharing insights from her global teaching and research in liturgical studies.

Worship Workshop

Worship Workshop

In April 2025, the Baylor Church Music program hosted a Worship Workshop at First Baptist Church of Belton, TX, bringing together students and leaders for a day of learning, collaboration, and renewal. Designed to equip and inspire church musicians and worship leaders, the workshop featured practical sessions on worship planning, ensemble leadership, and creative approaches to leading others in singing. This gathering reflects Baylor’s ongoing commitment to serve the wider church community by fostering excellence in music ministry and providing resources that strengthen worship across diverse contexts.

Worship Lab

Worship Lab

Some 115 high school students participated in the 2025 Worship Lab. These students represented some 50 churches across six states. Each band received a contemporary worship song and a hymn sharing the same message in different styles. Students were encouraged to see how both old and new songs can be used in worship. Additionally, Worship Lab held its first songwriting pre-camp. Alongside a successful summer camp, the Worship Lab Initiative grant project has entered its second year. We’ve begun implementing our four youth worship ministry models created from our model partners last year. Our team now has six people total, and we’re regularly visiting and learning from our growth partner churches to support and strengthen youth worship ministries.

Alleluia

Alleluia Conference

We hosted the 24th Annual Alleluia Conference in July of this year. The event brought together 279 leaders from 26 states and three countries, representing 168 churches across nine denominations. The conference featured 90 breakout sessions on music ministry topics, 15 hours of choral and instrumental reading sessions including a full-orchestra anthem event, and evening highlights such as a hymn sing, a School of Music alumni reception, and a concert with artist Matt Papa. With more exhibitors than ever and inspiring clinicians like Dan Baker, Eric Nelson, and Ryan Flanigan, this year’s conference offered a vibrant atmosphere and unforgettable experiences.

Hearn 2025

Hearn Innovators Series with Sandra McCracken

In September, we welcomed Sandra McCracken back to campus through the Hearn Innovators Series. Over two days, the GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter and hymn writer shared insights into her creative process and the stories behind beloved songs like “We Will Feast in the House of Zion” and “Steadfast.” Her visit also included a public concert on Sunday, September 21st at First Baptist Waco as part of her “Welcome Home” tour.

CM Christmas

A Baylor Christmas

Congratulations to the many Church Music students who participated in A Baylor Christmas! This beloved tradition stands as one of the School of Music’s most significant and visible undertakings, bringing together hundreds of voices and instruments to share the joy of the season with our community. Our students not only contributed their musical gifts but also demonstrated the discipline, collaboration, and spiritual depth that define Baylor’s Church Music program. With remarkable poise, artistry, and skill, they represented Baylor with excellence, embodying both the musical and ministerial heart of our mission.

As we reflect on the work of 2025, let us carry forward the lessons, the music, and the faith that have shaped us this year. Join us as we step boldly into 2026 with renewed vision, deeper commitment, and hearts ready to serve. Together, we continue the journey of worship, scholarship, and community.

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
