Nigerian Christian Songs Website
A Digital Songbook for Christian Worship
A collaboration between students from the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary and Baylor University
About this Project
What would it look like to build a church songbook from the bottom up, rather than the top down? How would a songbook look (and sound) if it were built around the perspectives of church-goers rather than denominational leaders? And what possibilities might an online, multimedia songbook afford that a printed songbook does not?
These questions inform the new online resource Nigerian Christian Songs: A Digital Interactive Songbook, produced from a collaboration between church music doctoral students at the Nigerian Baptist Theological Seminary in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, Nigeria and doctoral students at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, USA.
Nigerian Christian Songs is an online digital songbook and songbook companion whose aim is to reflect the unique, complex, and multifaceted “music culture” of contemporary Nigerian Protestant Christians, particularly those within the Baptist tradition. During the Spring 2021 semester, students based in Nigeria and the USA have collaborated to build this resource which highlights the songs, styles, musical activities, and material culture of music-making in contemporary Nigerian churches.
