Sam Still
B.A. w/ Church Music Minor Student

I came to Baylor as a Medical Humanities major on the Pre-Med track, after having greatly enjoyed my math and science classes in high school. Along with these classes, however, I had the opportunity to take classes in literature, theology, and history. In addition to all of these subjects, music (and, more specifically, the music of the Church) was always a principal part of my growing-up years. In addition to singing in children’s and youth choirs, I began participating in worship leadership in my youth group at First Baptist Church of Waco during the 7th grade. When I entered Baylor in the fall of 2014, I had many different interests and a number of ideas as to what my calling and vocation might be.
During the summer in between my freshman and sophomore years at Baylor, while I was abroad with Baylor in Madrid studying Spanish, I discerned God calling me to vocational ministry (specifically music ministry). I firmly believe that had I not been a student at Baylor, I would not have seen my way clear to meet God “where [my] deepest gladness and the world’s deepest hunger meet” (Frederick Beuchner’s description of “calling”). One of the beautiful aspects of being a part of the Christian community at Baylor University is the way in which professors, administrators, and peers encourage you to seek and to follow God’s guidance.
Ever since this crucial juncture in my life, I have continued to be invigorated and enriched by each new intellectual and educational experience here at Baylor. Whether I am reading Great Texts, learning about the traditions of Church music, singing songs of praise to God, or embarking upon another intellectual pursuit, I will have a never-ending appreciation and affection for Baylor. The academic challenges, unforgettable experiences, and true friendships I have found at Baylor during my college career have shaped me and will continue to do so as I lean into and live out my calling to music ministry.
Samuel Still is a Junior at Baylor University, pursuing a B.A. in Great Texts with a Minor in Church Music. Sam stayed in his hometown of Waco, Texas to attend Baylor University. After completing his undergraduate degree, Sam plans to attend Baylor’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary and to pursue his calling to vocational music ministry. Currently, Sam serves as the College Worship Coordinator at the First Baptist Church of Waco, and he composes and records his own music.
